WV Wellness Center
As you know, part of our mission to build pathways out of poverty involves providing the families we serve with sustainable access to healthcare.
Well, we just came one step closer.
Worthy Village has acquired a new medical branch: The Lake Atitlan Wellness Center, and we cannot think of a more perfect match.
Led by Dr. Louis De Pena and John Van Lente, the Lake Atitlan Wellness Center is dedicated to the health and well being of the indigenous community of Guatemala. With medical degrees and experience from the United States and Guatemala, Family Physician, Dr. Louis de Pena’s rich knowledge and diverse experiences are essential to providing quality care to patients in deep need.
Meanwhile, John Van Lente is a force all his own. With dual licensure as a clinical therapist and community organizer, “Dr. John” aids families facing intense traumas and crises.
Nursing and medical students work alongside John and Louis, learning tropical medicine and medical terminology. Working with Worthy Village, John and Louis ensure that poverty is never a barrier to health.

In rural Guatemala, life can be cut short by treatable conditions like pneumonia, mental illness, and diabetes. Lack of healthcare is a massive obstacle to success for families who are already struggling, forcing many to choose between things like paying for schooling, or buying life saving medicines.
Working as one, Worthy Village and the clinic are able to administer medical and psychological care to the families we work with each and every day on a “what-you-can-give” donation basis. “We don’t charge, we only request what a family is able to give… sometimes it’s nothing, sometimes it’s surprisingly generous” de Pena shared, Founder of the clinic.
From addiction counseling, diabetes management, to cervical cancer screenings and much more, patients receive consultations and medicines, counseling, and discount lab services, while our outreach clinics bring lifesaving medicine to families living in the most remote and rural areas.
Worthy Village has worked in partnership with the clinic and has seen first-hand their dedication to serving all those in need. Officially welcoming the Lake Atitlan Wellness Center to our family is truly an honor for Worthy Village.
The Worthy Village offices and social services department have officially moved into the clinic facility as we grow our partnership and begin administering, what we will now refer to as, The Worthy Village Wellness Center.
