Services Provided by the WV Wellness Center

Services are provided on a what-you-can-give donation basis at the WV Wellness Center. We do not set prices, we simply ask what the patient is able to contribute and we never turn someone away.

Social Services

Social Services

Led by three Indigenous Maya women, these three social workers navigate our patients through the Wellness Center. Upon entrance, patients are greeted by one of our social workers and guided throughout the process of being at the center.

Oftentimes, the communities we serve do not speak Spanish, they speak a local dialect. The social workers are able to comfort the patients, speaking and translating to their own dialect, and relating culturally. Being culturally sensitive is a priority at the WV Wellness Center.

Our Social Services department focuses on working with families to assess areas of need and find sustainable solutions within the family. It can range from guidance, money management, school enrollment, food security, or registering the family in one of our ongoing social services programs for assistance.

Our social workers play a very important role in ensuring the conform of those we work with at the Wellness Center, as well as following up on patient’s needs.

Medical Services

Medical Services

Led by Dr. Louis de Pena, our medical department provides family medical services to all people in need; particularly aimed for those with inability to provide their families with healthcare.

We are able to provide free medical consultations, medications, discount lab services such as ultrasounds, electrocardiograms, blood testing for diabetics, urinalysis, etc.

Through this department, we run multiple outreach clinics annually to remote communities that lack healthcare with referrals and follow up to the WV Wellness Center.

We are honored to provide training in tropical medicine and medical Spanish terminology for medical and nursing students, including outreach journeys to remote community healthcare.

This department works in conjunction with other organizations for provision of medical care such as referrals to and from government hospitals, other health centers and NGOs.

Psych Services

Psych Services

Led by John Van Lente, our Psych services are basic mental health and addiction assessments and treatment.

Mental health includes the entire bio-psycho-social assessment following the outline used at the John’s Hopkins School of Psychiatry. The treatment follows the priority triage outlined in the DSM manuals for treatment (Diagnostic Statistical Manuals).

Treatment always seeks to use and include family systems work and relational issues and also is in the setting of primary care for total health needs. As an example, a chemically dependent person always has cardiac functions monitored as well as basic underlying mood disorders addressed concurrent with detoxification and addictions treatment. Additionally, the family members are oriented into the roles normally assumed by hospital staff were the procedures conducted in a residential or hospital setting.
